Two People Sitting At A Table SpeakingMediation isn’t magic—though it often feels like it once you see its results. It follows a structured yet adaptable process to ensure fairness and inclusivity. This process is different for every conflict and every person, but there are some broad steps you nearly always see:

Initiation

Mediation starts when all parties involved agree to participate. This willingness is crucial because the process is voluntary. The Mediator (or their staff) will interview and screen everyone involved.

Introduction

The Mediator explains the rules of engagement, sets the tone, and emphasizes confidentiality. Everyone should feel comfortable expressing their views without fear of judgment or repercussions.

Sharing Perspectives

Each party gets a chance to voice their side of the story. The Mediator listens carefully, ensuring that everyone feels heard.

Identifying Issues

Together, the parties and the Mediator pinpoint the core issues at hand. This step is like untangling a messy knot to reveal what everyone Needs that they aren't getting.

Generating Solutions

Brainstorming time! The Mediator encourages all sides to explore creative solutions that address their Needs and Interests. The parties themselves define what's important to them, as well as what will and won't work.

Agreement

Once a mutually acceptable solution is found, it’s often formalized into an agreement. This agreement can be written down so that everyone is on the same page.
